About the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
The GDPR is a new regulation that applies to all organisations holding data on EU citizens. It came into effect in April 2016 and the final date for compliance is May 25th 2018, after which penalties may be issued for non-compliance. The GDPR requires data to be processed securely and according to the purpose for which the data was collected. It is important to note that the UK Government has stated that the GDPR will apply even after the UK leaves the EU.
The regulation places new obligations on data controllers and data processors, and at the same time, citizens gain new rights over the use of their data and in some cases need to provide explicit consent.
